When is a tooth extraction necessary?

While our goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, there are times when extractions are sometimes necessary to protect your overall oral health.

Tooth extractions are typically recommended when:

A tooth is severely decayed or damaged beyond repair
There is significant crowding, often in preparation for orthodontic treatment
A wisdom tooth is impacted or causing pain and complications
Gum disease has weakened the tooth and its supporting structures
An infection poses a risk to your overall health and cannot be resolved with other treatments

Your clinician will discuss this in detail with you so you can be sure that the chosen treatment is the best one for you.

Your treatment journey

If you’re experiencing tooth pain or believe you may need an extraction, contact us today. Our caring and experienced team is here to guide you through the process and provide the highest standard of dental care.

Why might a tooth need to be removed?

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, loose or cannot be predictably restored. Teeth may also occasionally be removed as part of orthodontic treatment.

01
Will having a tooth removed hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area before treatment begins. You may feel pressure or movement, but you should not feel sharp pain during the extraction.

02
How long does it take to recover?

Initial healing usually takes place over the first one to two weeks, although the area beneath the gum continues to heal for longer. Your dentist will provide instructions based on the complexity of your extraction.

03
What should I avoid after an extraction?

You will usually be advised to avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing, strenuous exercise and disturbing the area for a period after treatment. Following your dentist’s instructions helps protect the healing blood clot.

What happens after a tooth removal?

Losing a tooth doesn’t have to mean losing your smile. We’re committed to helping you restore both functionality and aesthetics by discussing a variety of tooth replacement options, such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that suits your needs and ensures your long-term oral health.

Frequent Questions

How long does bridge treatment take?

Most bridges are completed over two to three visits: assessment, fitting a temporary bridge, then bonding the permanent one once it’s crafted.

Is getting a bridge fitted painful?

We numb the area before preparing supporting teeth, so the process is generally comfortable. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and settles quickly.

How do I look after a bridge?

Brush as usual and use a bridge floss or interdental brush underneath it daily to keep the area clean and healthy.

Is a bridge or an implant better for me?

It depends on the condition of neighbouring teeth, bone density and your preferences. We’ll talk through the best option at your consultation.
